They call Jackson Hole the last of the Old West for a reason. Indigenous people spent time in this bountiful valley for thousands of years before the first European fur trappers laid eyes on it. It was still a wild place without permanent settlers when Yellowstone became the world's first national park in 1872. The first homesteaders arrived a decade later, but the population was still sparse when Grand Teton National park was founded in 1929. Jackson Hole has been a tourist destination ever since.
